When we last saw the dueling duo, they were standing back to back on London’s Tower Bridge, asking what comes next. As they walked away from each other in opposite directions, both women stopped and turned back for one last glance. But will they end up as friends, lovers or enemies? Plus, will we ever find out the identity of The Twelve, who lead the criminal organization Villanelle works for? Is there more to last season’s death of fellow former spy Kenny (Sean Delaney), who was looking into The Twelve? And what about MI6 agent Carolyn (Fiona Shaw), who recently gunned down a double agent, and Villanelle’s handler Konstantin (Kim Bodnia), who wanted out? Here’s all we know about what’s to come in the fourth, and final, season of KillingEve.
When does Killing Eve Season 4 premiere?
In the U.S., the first two episodes of Season 4 will premiere back-to-back on BBC America Sunday, February 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT; if you don’t get that network, episodes will also air Mondays on AMC beginning Monday, Feb. 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. As mentioned above, you can watch Killing Eve in the U.S. on two different cable networks: BBC America, which debuts new Season 4 episodes on Sunday nights, and AMC on Monday nights. Is there a Killing Eve Season 4 trailer?
The official, full-length trailer finally arrived on Feb. 1, along with the ominous tagline, “The Final Obsession is here.” Before that, the first teaser showed several familiar Killing Eve props—a pink dress, a pig mask, postcards that inform Villanelle where her next hit will be, the voice-recording teddy bear Villanelle gave Eve—on fire. A second teaser released on Twitter with the caption, “Actions have consequences,” started with Eve and Villanelle back-to-back on Tower Bridge, as they were at the end of last season. A voiceover from Carolyn says, “Do you ever think what might have happened if we hadn’t done what we did?” followed by flashbacks of scenes from previous seasons. Carolyn continues, “People like us aren’t made for happy lives with happy endings,” as we get quick shots of what’s to come, including: Eve on a stage as spotlights shine in her face, Villanelle reflecting quietly outside, Konstantin taking a call, Eve banging on a car window from inside the car, someone getting stabbed in the arm, someone pushing someone else off a bridge, Hélène in a bathtub, Eve pointing a gun, a couple of new characters (one carrying a dead animal that appears to be a sheep, the other carrying a box), and someone tied up with a bag over their head. We then see Villanelle walking along a seaside boardwalk as Eve pulls up beside her on a scooter. “Want a ride?” she asks. The trailer ends with Villanelle riding the scooter—alone. Additional pics from the new season show Eve in blond wig, Carolyn sitting by an indoor pool, and Eve staring at a fish tank.
Will Eve die on Killing Eve?
Well, the show is called Killing Eve, after all, so it does seem like the title is trying to tell viewers something—but could it really be that obvious? Maybe not: Killing Eve could refer to the end of the person she was before. In Season 4, Eve has finally acquired some tactical know-how, which could mean she’ll be able to better defend herself against a future attack. “I think the change for Eve is first very physical [this season],” Oh toldEntertainmentWeekly. “You see her, she looks different; she’s trained; she has all these different skills.” In addition, Eve has been shot before and survived, so in this cat and mouse game, maybe the cat really does have nine lives—and she’s no longer scared to fight back. “She’s not afraid of violence in herself or inflicting it on others,” Eve said at the Television Critics Association panel in January 2022, perET.
Will Villanelle kill Eve on Killing Eve?
If anyone will do Eve in, it will be Villanelle. But oddly, when Villanelle tried to kill Eve previously, she failed—which is out of character for such a thorough assassin. So maybe Villanelle never really meant to kill Eve? In her twisted way, she loves Eve; yet Comer says that Villanelle will never really be a “good” person. “When we open Season 4, Villanelle has found a church and she is on this quest to be good. I think [she does it] to prove to other people that she’s capable, and also to herself,” she told EW. “Villanelle is operating from a place of her motivation is all wrong. It’s not truthful. So therefore, she can’t really succeed at it.” Plus, viewers don’t really want a reformed Villanelle—we love how bad she is. “She has gone on this journey with her moral compass and humanity, but I was like, I want her back, badder than ever,” Comer toldTheNewYorkTimes. She also told EW that will happen in Season 4. “There is definitely a moment in this season, where I was like, ‘Oh, she’s back.’ I was kind of craving that artistry that she used to really thrive for [in her killing],” she said. Could Eve be her target? It’s possible.
Will Villanelle die on Killing Eve?
On the flip side, it’s possible Villanelle could meet her end—it’s hard to imagine her having a happily ever after ending, yet she can’t go on murdering people forever, can she? Plus, we know that Villanelle’s attempt to turn over a new leaf will be fleeting, so she won’t be leaving violence behind for very long. Comer also spilled that the series’ final scene involves both her and Oh together, and that it will be quite surprising—which could mean death for her character, or both of them. “It’s mixed emotions. I was kind of stunned,” she told The New York Times about learning how Killing Eve would end. “The beautiful thing about shooting the ending was that we were together on set, which was amazing. I don’t know how I feel about the ending, truth be told.”
Will Eve kill Villanelle on Killing Eve?
If Villanelle dies, it would make sense that she would be killed by Eve, especially since the latter is no longer shying away from violence. And after all, Eve did make a half-hearted assassination attempt way back at the end of Season 1, when she stabbed Villanelle. “To be able to explore, obviously fictitiously, through a character, your own moral ambiguity and to not deny that, I like the fact that this season, you see Eve embrace it and step in, wholeheartedly,” Oh toldCollider. “It takes her into very questioning places, but there’s less fear, I’d say.” If she’s no longer afraid of Villanelle, she also may be no longer afraid to stand up to her. Plus, in the trailer, Eve asks Villanelle if she knows the fable of the scorpion and the frog, in which they both die because the scorpion can’t change its nature—and Villanelle tells Eve maybe she is the scorpion. Does that mean Villanelle is the frog? “If Eve looked deep down, she would know that a long-standing healthy relationship with Villanelle is probably not going to happen,” executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle toldThe Hollywood Reporter after Season 3 ended. “So what does that mean for her life if she can’t turn away from her? And how much of this is about what Villanelle has awoken in Eve that she can’t turn her back on? What if the genie is out of the bottle? What does she do with that?” But Eve and Villanelle seemed to have reached a detente at the end of the last season, with both of them walking away from each other on London’s Tower Bridge. “Even though there’s a lot going on, there just seems to be a calmness and less resistance between the two,” Comer told Collider. “You just see them react in ways that are so different because, in the past, it has been so hostile and fragmented that it feels very different this season, from the bridge onwards.” Our theory: Season 1 ended with Eve attempting to kill Villanelle, Season 2 ended with Villanelle attempting to kill Eve, and Season 3 ended with neither of them attempting to kill the other, so Season 4 may end with both of them killing each other. Oh told The New York Times the scene in which Eve and Villanelle stare at each other through a fish tank is an intentional reference to Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 movie Romeo + Juliet—and we know how things turned out for those star-crossed lovers. “A proper romance is always doomed,” Oh toldTVLine. We know the last scene of the show will be both of them together—they could be meeting their fate side by side.
What is The Twelve on KillingEve?
Although the main appeal of Killing Eve is its fascinating two main characters, secondarily is the globetrotting spy story that pits Eve and MI6 against a mysterious criminal organization called The Twelve. Their main objective remains unclear, but we know they hire assassins to murder people. Although we’ve come across some characters who work for the group, we don’t know exactly who’s in charge. The low-level assassins include Villanelle, who last season wanted to move into management; next up the ladder are the assassin’s handlers, including Konstantin. In Season 3 we met a higher ranking agent named Hélène, who will play a bigger role this season; we’ll also meet some new assassins. Previously, we’ve seen some other collaborators along the way: In Season 1, viewers learned that Eve’s MI5 boss Frank Haleton was a double agent for The Twelve, but was executed by Villanelle. Last season, The Twelve’s accountant Charles Kruger was framed for stealing money from the group, then was also promptly killed by Villanelle (Konstantin really took the money because he wanted out). And at the end of last season, we also discovered that MI6 boss Paul Bradwell was an informant to The Twelve, but MI6 agent Carolyn took care of him in the last episode. Still, none of those we’ve met so far who are involved in The Twelve seem to be the big boss. Could it be someone else we’ve already met? In Season 4, Eve and Carolyn are out for revenge as they attempt to uncover and take down the organization.
What will happen to Carolyn on Killing Eve?
Carolyn is still on a secret mission to find out what really happened to her son, Kenny—did Konstantin really kill him by accident, or was there more to his death? “It’s the driving force of Carolyn’s storyline this season. It takes her all around the world in her quest, let’s just say, to solve or find Kenny’s killer—but it turns into something much deeper about her moral fiber,” Oh told EW. At the beginning of the season, she’s been “put out to pasture” by MI6, as new head writer and executive producer Laura Neal toldEntertainmentWeekly. Now a cultural attaché in Mallorca, Carolyn has never been the type to sit back and relax. “They have given her a cushy job in the sunshine. In repayment for that, they’re expecting her not to make any trouble. And, of course, not making trouble is not in Carolyn’s nature,” Neal says. Not content to kick up her feet, Carolyn persists in her hunt to get to the bottom of things. In the trailer, she says that someone has been killing members of The Twelve, and that she needs Eve to continue the investigation. “Her previous moral code is thrown up in the air,” Neal said. “She aligns herself with people that were previously enemies. Carolyn spends more time than we’ve ever seen before with Villanelle.” But will she make it out alive? If Eve and Villanelle succumb to mutual destruction, it’s possible Carolyn could wind up the sole survivor.
What will happen to Konstantin on Killing Eve?
There’s always been something sweetly teddy bear-like about Konstantin, and so we wish for his happy ending, for him to escape the criminal life and live out his days with his family. But as that seems to be how he starts out the season, it likely won’t be how he ends up. “We love the idea of giving Konstantin a bit of luxury,” Neal told EW, revealing he starts out the season at home in Mother Russia. “We find him finally with an ounce of happiness and with an ounce of true status. And I enjoy watching him in that place, knowing that it’s about to be ripped out from under his feet.” Uh oh! So it looks like there will be more trouble ahead for Konstantin. ”We were curious to see what would happen if Konstantin started examining his own life and his own behavior and his choices—and what that would lead him to be wanting in this season,” Neal said. Also, she said, ”if you’ve ever wanted to see him wet, then you’re in luck,” so he could be the person who gets thrown into the water in the trailer. Hopefully, he’ll survive!
Which cast members will return for Killing Eve Season 4?
Oh returns as the titular Eve, a reluctant spy who gets caught up in her obsession over Villanelle while trying to chase her down. Comer, who won an Emmy for her role, returns as the outlandish assassin, who both dresses and murders with her own uniquely flashy style. Shaw is also back as the icy MI6 agent Carolyn, who revealed a more emotional side last season after her son Kenny was killed. Also included in the cast for Season 4 is Villanelle’s handler-slash-father figure Konstantin (Bodnia); Villanelle’s new boss, Hélène (Camille Cottin) is also seen in a photo from the new season and in the trailer, evidence that she’ll be back as well. Beyond that, we’re not sure what other supporting cast members will return, but they could include Eve’s estranged husband Niko (Owen McDonnell), who miraculously survived after finding himself at the receiving end of an assassin’s pitchfork—but who also memorably told Eve to “piss off forever.” Also unclear is if Carolyn’s daughter, Geraldine (Gemma Whelan), or Konstantin’s daughter, Irina (Yuli Lagodinsky), will be back. In addition, the team at The Bitter Pill, the online publication Kenny was working for—that’s Jamie (Danny Sapani), Bear (Turlough Convery) and Audrey (Ayoola Smart)—could return, but nothing’s confirmed. Sadly, we won’t be seeing deceased characters Kenny, Carolyn’s MI6 underling Mo (Raj Bajaj), assassin Rhian (Alexandra Roach), or Carolyn’s treacherous boss, Paul (Steve Pemberton). All have met their end on the show. Another one we’re not totally sure of: Villanelle’s assassin mentor Dasha (Harriet Walter), who died after being attacked by Villanelle and Eve—or did she? Season 3 head writer and executive producer Suzanne Heathcote left it somewhat open. “She was written to be dead in the script. She’s dead. They may find a way to resurrect her in Season 4, but yeah, the way we wrote it, the intention was: Her heart had stopped. She’s gone. She’s left us,” Heathcote told TVLine. So she’s saying there’s a chance Dasha could come back? We’ll have to wait and see.
Are there any Killing Eve Season 4 spoilers?
Fans are, of course, dying to find out about the fallout from the Season 3 finale: Was Konstantin telling the truth about Kenny’s death? What will happen to Carolyn now that she’s killed her boss? Where does Villanelle stand with The Twelve—will she end up joining forces with MI6? And can Eve ever really quit Villanelle? AMC has revealed a few tidbits about the plot of Season 4, including that Eve goes on a “revenge mission”—although we don’t quite know revenge for what. Villanelle, attempting to prove she’s “not a monster,” may have found religion: A new pic shows her in a red robe looking like she’s leading a church service, and in another, she’s dressed in angelic white and wearing a cross. And while a defeated Carolyn said in the Season 3 finale that they’ll never be able to uncover The Twelve, Season 4 has her trying to do just that, going to “extraordinary lengths” to find out who they are and who marked Kenny for death. Comer says the always unpredictable Villanelle will go to dazzling new heights in Season 4. The script “really pushed the boundaries with Villanelle,” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK in November 2021. “One of my only requests with Season 4 was that I wanted Villanelle’s fire reignited, as I felt it had fizzled out a bit. There is a particular moment that’s like nothing we’ve ever done in Killing Eve." What is it? We can’t wait!
What happened in Killing Eve Season 3?
Season 3 was largely focused on who killed Kenny (insert South Park joke here). After previously having been involved in his mother’s MI6 operation tracking down Villanelle, in Season 3, Kenny was still secretly trying to uncover Villanelle’s bosses at the shadowy organization The Twelve. After he fell off the roof of his office building to his death, Carolyn and Eve went on a rogue mission to continue Kenny’s investigation, while also trying to figure out who wanted him dead. They discover someone has been taking money from an account operated by The Twelve—and find out it’s Konstantin, who’s been looking to escape the criminal world all together. Meanwhile, Villanelle has been working her way up the criminal corporate ladder into management, which, it turns out, is way less fun than killing people herself. It doesn’t help that she has a habit of offing the underlings she’s supposed to be managing. Villanelle also makes a visit to her home country of Russia to see her family—most of whom she subsequently murders. In the final episode of Season 3, we learn that Konstantin was with Kenny when he died, but he tells Carolyn it was an accident. Just when it seems that she is about to execute him, she shifts the gun and kills her MI6 superior, Paul, instead—who was actually a double agent with The Twelve. As they leave the scene of Carolyn’s crime, for once Eve and Villanelle seemed to end the season on positive terms (no shooting or stabbing, which is a good day for these two)—but how long can that last?
Was Killing Eve Season 4 delayed by the pandemic?
Yes. Season 3 of Killing Eve got us through the beginning of the pandemic when it aired in the spring of 2020. Past seasons had aired in the spring of 2018 and 2019, so we might have expected a new season in the spring of 2021. If production had continued on its normal timeline, it would have begun shooting in late summer 2020, but in July 2020, Deadline reported that production had been shut down indefinitely. “Killing Eve shoots across multiple European locations. Due to the uncertainty of the world as a result of COVID-19, no shooting schedules for Killing Eve season four have been locked in at this point and there are various scenarios in play,” a spokesperson for the show told the outlet. Filming finally began in summer 2021, with a teaser clip on the show’s official Twitter account in October giving a little behind-the-scenes peek at shooting. The new season premieres in February 2022, which means scheduling issues due to the pandemic caused nearly a year’s delay.
What else is new for Killing Eve Season 4?
In keeping with the tradition of having a new female lead writer each season, this time the reigns have been handed over to Laura Neal, who’ll also be an executive producer. Previous head writers were Suzanne Heathcote (Season 3), Emerald Fennell (Season 2) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Season 1), who remains an executive producer as well. Although the show is notable for so many talented women both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, the writers room did take some flack in 2020 after a Twitter screenshot of their video call revealed the lack of diversity—all the writers were white. Executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle did address the issue, taking responsibility and saying in a virtual panel that they needed to “do better.” Whether that has been truly rectified for Season 4, though, is not clear. Oh had also previously talked about the lack of diversity as she’s been working in Britain, saying in a Variety interview with KerryWashington, “The UK, I’m not afraid to say, is behind. The development of people behind the camera is very slow in the UK… Sometimes it would be me and 75 white people.”
Is this Killing Eve’s final season?
Yes, sadly this will be Killing Eve’s last season. “Killing Eve has been one of my greatest experiences,” Oh said in a press release from March 2021. “I’m so grateful for all cast and crew who have brought our story to life and to the fans who have joined us and will be back for our exciting and unpredictable fourth and final season.” Although we hate to see it go, Comer says she’d rather end the series on a high note. “We never, ever want for that [quality] to drop, or to carry on a story for the sake of carrying on, whether that be greed or whatever the reason,” she told Variety in November 2021. “It feels like where we are right now, it feels natural that we’ve come to this point where, now, we can really focus on the ending.”
Will there be a Killing Eve spinoff?
Season 4 may not mark the end of the Killing Eve universe, as the show’s production company is working with AMC Networks to “develop a number of potential spinoff ideas,” according to the March 2021 press release. But, it doesn’t appear that Villanelle will be included. “I’ve by no means been a part of any conversations,” Comer told Variety about the spinoffs. It’s possible the new show or shows will focus on another spy and another villain—and in any case, we’ll be happy for more Killing Eve-style witty, wacky adventures to come.
