In the new film, Roberts and Clooney play ex-spouses trying to stop their daughter, played by Kaitlyn Dever, from getting married—traveling all the way to Bali together to do so. In an interview with TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, the two revealed a scene in the film in which they were feeling confident in their acting (or rather, dancing) skills, but the reaction from co-stars wasn’t what they hoped for. In the scene, their characters get drunk and dance wildly in front of Dever, Maxime Bouttier (who plays her character’s fiancé) and others. While talking to Kotb about the scene, Roberts joked, “That was some of our best acting.” Imitating their younger co-stars’ responses, Clooney said, “The young kids just were so, they were so… they were shockingly embarrassed.” “They were stunned. They were paralyzed,” added Roberts. Of course, the scene is supposed to be embarrassing and funny for the characters, but according to Clooney, “We thought we were really funny, and they didn’t.” He said to Roberts, “Remember they were just kind of staring at us like we were in the zoo? We’re like, ‘Pretty funny, huh?’ and they’re like, ‘Oh, my God!’” As for why Dever and Bouttier reacted this way, Clooney believed it was because “They can see what it’s like to get old. And it’s terrifying them!” But when Kotb spoke with Dever herself, the 25-year-old said that it wasn’t true. She told Kotb, “They were very chill the whole time and then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, they just started doing this, which is all just improv.” She continued, “I was just truly in awe that George likes to say that we were completely embarrassed by them, but it was actually, I was acting embarrassed, but inside I was like, ‘What I’m witnessing right now is epic.’” We sure can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about!
